About Department
The English Department is one of the oldest departments started with the establishment of the College in 1958. The Department with an illustrious history, prides itself in having the distinction of being a forerunner in offering quality college education in English. It is still a force to reckon with for quality teaching in English Language and Literature. In times where there was no media explosion, the teaching methods used by the department were simple and didactic, yet intellectually stimulating for the learners to develop an integral interest in English Literature and Language. The Alumnae across the globe remember with pride ‘It was not just a classroom but learning about life itself through Literature’. It is the largest department in the College offering students a variety of academic programs from the Intermediate (Plus Two) to PG level. In keeping with the latest trends of genres of Literature, the Department has ensured the relevance of the discipline in today’s world, while maintaining traditional strengths.
The Department introduced the streaming system for General English in 1987 when the College became autonomous. The Streaming enabled the Department to focus on different levels of language capacities of learners from diverse background especially the vernacular medium. The Streaming has seen the learners shed their inhibitions while learning English suited to their background and proficiency levels of English.
The Department provides intensive mentoring to students both within and beyond the classroom across a wide variety of forums. The techniques of the department are Lectures, Film Reviews, Symposia, Conferences, and Seminars on interdisciplinary themes. A big feather in the cap in recent times is starting ‘LitSpell’ – The English Club in the year 2015, through which various literary activities are organized to enhance the knowledge of Literature while stimulating a passion for specialising at Post Graduate level. Celebrating the birth Anniversaries of Great Litterateurs who have made a remarkable contribution of English Language and Literature, is a regular feature of the Club.
The Department offers English for Intermediate, General English & Communication & Soft Skills which is common for all Undergraduate students. It also offers B.A. English Language and Literature as one of the core paper for Under-graduate students with ten papers spread over a period of six semesters. The Post Graduate Course which is affiliated to Andhra University, offers the M.A. English Language and Literature Programme with ten papers over a period of four semesters.
The Department also offers specialised, skill-based courses such as English for Hospitality, Add on Courses in Communication Skills at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. The aim of the Department is to equip students with critical thinking, analytical, conceptual and communication skills which will enable them to work in many professions – writing, teaching, content writing, journalism, translation, features writing and editing of books.

Mission
The Department of English Language and Literature seeks to fosters the intellectual development of its majors by encouraging study of literature and writing -whether, technical or other professional writing along with the needs of general education diversity, and global perspectives with those of the majors.
The overall mission of the English Department is to promote literacy-specifically the ability to read, write, and think critically and strengthens the liberal education of students by developing a deepened understanding of language and literacy, the value of critical reading and effective writing, and the richness of literature, past and present.
